The Ray Gun

In a continuing effort to bring my interests in light and sound together, here's the Ray Gun. Inspired by a physics demonstration my dad gives, a laser is fired at a photo cell (from a $1.99 calculator). The pulse it gives off is modulated by interrupting the laser with a spinning screen. The pitch is changed by speed, controlled in this case with a model train controller. Endless hours of fun are to be had by routing the output into a multi-fx pedal.

Where the River Meets the Sea - closing reception

Thanks to everyone that came by for the closing reception, I had a lot of fun. I heard someone describe the night as a living room picnic, and that makes me happy. We also had some people wander in on their way home from laying out at the park. They just unrolled their blanket again and laid down for the evening. It was fantastic!

In case you couldn't make it, Gaelan and I improvised layered ambient music to a layered video from two projectors. We had three 45 minute sets with 15 minute breaks in between.

It was a ton of fun, and it seemed like everyone had a nice time relaxing and enjoying.

Where the River Meets the Sea
closing reception statement

The definition of music is sound organized by time. A similar idea can be used to define photography- light organized by time.

I find myself caught by them both, and by the idea of points on a line, be it origins and destinations in travel, notes in a score, opening and closing shutter times, eyes at opposite ends of a glance; distance is traversed, and I am fascinated by the stories told.

The presentation tonight is an informal response to the themes in which my photography is rooted, from formal elements such as layering and texture, to the conceptual- the degradation of memory, the romance of nostalgia and isolation, and the invisible lines that tie individuals together to form relationships, which intersect countless other such lines. These projected images will layer in unexpected ways for me, and I will be responding with improvised sounds, in an unpracticed collaboration, much in the same uncertainty in which I set out to take pictures, not sure of the outcome, nor been able to prepare for the specific circumstances I will find. I take what I know from memory and experience and step forward, as we must all do in life, each and every day.

Tonight will be a look at where the still frame sits in a film, where the note lands in the melody, where an you and I meet the world around us, where the river meets the sea.

Cascadia Physical Therapy

The owner of Cascadia Physical Therapy saw my work up at the Lettered Streets Coffeehouse and asked if I would like to hang in his office for a month! Of course I was quite happy to, and the work looks great in there. What a wonderful place to display work that showcases movement. A giant thank you high-five to Kimmie who helped hang the show.

The work will be hung there the month of May, and has the pleasure of following "Loopholes" by local artist and industrial designer Adriana Phillips.

Allied Arts Members Show

Photograph 11 has been submitted to the Allied Arts Members Show. The show is a big group show, with over 100 different artists represented, and it's a lot of fun to be part of it.

I had been hesistant to join a group show, especially one this large, but I think this will be a great way for a lot of people who probably would not see my work, to at least get a glimpse. It'll also give me a chance to meet a lot of people that I otherwise might not have.

The Allied Arts Members Show open March 6, 2009 and will be a great spot to swing by during Art Walk. I hope to see you there.

The Lettered Streets Coffeehouse show features 10 prints: 7 from Newport Beach, California, and 3 from Bellingham, Washington. In addition to the prints, there's also a small collection of handmade Polaroid-Lift cards for sell. The cards, made using a beautiful, yet dying technique, show material only from Bellingham, Washington, and they came out fantastic!

"Where the River Meets the Sea" Statement

Where the River Meets the Sea

This is a collection of photographs taken on a small stretch of southern California coast named River Jetties. It is the kind of place that on no two days will look the same, yet will always stretch out seemingly forever to the horizon. For this reason, I became enamored with the place, going there often for quiet, for perspective and for humility.

These photographs were taken with film cameras using shutter speeds ranging from the typical 60th of a second to the much longer 120 minutes. Holding the shutter open for this long means that frame of film inside the camera is absorbing much more light at once than the human eye is able to.

While I stand at the edge of the water and peer into the blackness beyond me, the camera is being flooded with a compounding stream of light. Printed, these images present us with hours of observation all at once.

For me, these images illustrate that which alone, I could not. Longing, patience, fear and hope touch me in ways I cannot see, and may not understand, but I have come to find beauty and peace in allowing myself these human limitations.

I hope these images speak to you as well. Thank you for spending time to look at them.
